It's time to seriously consider Cycling as a Form of Commute - it reduces mortality risk! Family Health
A study published in the BMJ investigated the association between active commuting and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer and all cause mortality. This population-based study included 263,450 participants and followed up with them for an average of 5 years.
It was shown that commuting by cycling was associated with a lower risk of all cause mortality and adverse CVD and cancer outcomes, and walking commuting was associated with lower risk of CVD (at least 6 miles per week) incidence and mortality. Mixed mode commuting was also beneficial if cycling was included.
This is a step to remind us to choose active commuting options, as well as to policy makers who can design schemes to encourage cycling, e.g. cycle lanes, city bike hire, subsidized cycle purchase schemes.
