Former First Lady Barbara Bush: Lessons Learned From a Life Fully Lived Headlines Opinion Become the Fire
As I was sitting down to write about First Lady Barbara Bush's beautifully brave decision to not seek further medical treatment and spend her remaining days on her terms, news broke that she has passed. I have deeply admired her no-nonsense, feisty candor and her undying passion for literacy. However, her undying devotion to her husband and family will no doubt be her legacy.
Having read her books, "A Memoir" and "Reflections," I gained a profound respect for the role as Supporter in Chief. Not only did she provide support to her husband's career as a public servant (having to relocate a family 29 times as a result), she supported an entire family in their grief when she lost a child to leukemia. I cannot imagine that level of grief, let alone carry on in the face of it with grace and modesty, but she did.
She made cardigans and gray hair cool. What else can you say about a woman who appeared in an episode of "Dude Perfect?" I think she said it best: “People who worry about their hair all the time, frankly, are boring.”
So read your child a book in her honor, tonight. Worry less about your hair and your house and hug your family. Laugh and play. She would.
