Major League Baseball's Blackout Policy Needs to Change (and Here's Why This Baseball Fan Thinks So) Sports & Recreation

Let’s talk about the Major League Baseball (MLB) blackout policy. MLB.TV is selling a package for $120 where baseball fans can watch all their favorite teams. So, ideally, you should be able to watch 183 days of baseball and every team, even your home team. So why can’t I watch the Cubs and Sox? If I’m paying them $120 I should be able to watch all games.

I have friends in Iowa City who are blocked out of watching nine teams. What is the point of even buying the package? If MLB wants to keep growing and keep its fans interested in the game, they need to change the blackout policy. More and more fans are cutting their cable, which causes people to not be able to watch the games. Baseball will continue to lose fans if changes aren’t made.

“Live games streamed within any MLB.TV product and available through At Bat and any other location or device where MLB.TV is sold or available are subjective to locally or national blackouts. If a game is blacked out in an area, it is not available for live game viewing through MLB.TV. If you are an MLB.TV subscriber within an area subject to blackout, the applicable game will be available as an archived game approximately 90 minutes after the conclusion of the game.” (MLB.com)
