Amish Wimpies Recipe: An Old-fashioned Loose Meat Sandwich From Pennsylvania by 30Seconds Food

Loose meat sandwiches are nothing new. Cooking ground beef with sauces, vegetables and seasonings is done in one way or the other all across the world. Who knew that the Amish and others living in Pennsylvania had their own version of a sloppy joe: wimpies. Wimpies are a ground beef sandwich that's similar to traditional sloppy joes but without the tomato sauce.
This easy wimpies recipe is made with ground beef, onion, celery, green bell pepper, vinegar, brown sugar, lemon juice, ketchup (kind of like tomato sauce), Worcestershire sauce and prepared mustard. The ground beef is cooked with the vegetables until cooked through. The remaining ingredients are added and gently simmered on the stovetop. The flavorful ground beef is served on hamburger buns.
Serve this hearty ground beef sandwich for dinner with a salad and french fries, onion rings or tater tots. This recipe can easily be doubled for larger families. You could substitute ground turkey for the ground beef.

Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 ribs celery, chopped (about 1/2 cup)
- 1/2 a green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon prepared mustard
- 1/4 cup water
- 4 hamburger buns
Here's how to make it:
- Cook the ground beef, onion, celery and bell pepper in a skillet until cooked through. Drain fat.
- Add the vinegar, brown sugar, lemon juice, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook, stirring often, about 20 minutes. Serve on hamburger buns.
