It seems like every state has their own version of barbecue sauce – or at least every region. Carolina-style is a vinegar-based sauce, Texas barbecue sauce is thick, spicy with a little sweetness, Alabama has a white barbecue sauce and Kansas city likes a thick tomato-based sauce usually made with molasses. This easy Kansas City-style barbecue sauce recipe is incredibly balanced, easy to make and complements any meat you want to use it on, from chicken to beef to pork.

To make this homemade barbecue sauce recipe you need to hit the pantry and fridge. Don't be intimidated by the list of ingredients! We bet you have most of them already in your kitchen. Here is your gluten-free shopping list: ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, red wine vinegar, molasses, butter, liquid smoke, salt, black pepper, ground paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground cayenne and chili powder.

The sweet and tangy barbecue sauce cooks up in about 20 minutes. Once it's done, use it on barbecued meats, as a dip for grilled steaks, on chicken, pork, for barbecue sandwiches, burnt ends or in any recipe calling for barbecue sauce.

Recipe Notes

If you don't need so much sauce, cut the recipe in half.

Some like to add a little ground cinnamon to this sauce. About 1/4 teaspoon should work. Try it!

Put the sauce into mason jars and give it to friends and family.

The longer you cook the sauce, the thicker it will get. If you like thinner sauce, add a little water.

Here's how to make it:

Put all the ingredients into a saucepot.
Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat and cook, stirring often, about 20 minutes or until it reaches desired consistency.
