Cosmetic microbeads (tiny pieces of plastic found in many health and beauty products like body scrubs) are virtually nonexistent today thanks to the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015. The act prohibits the manufacturing, packaging and distribution of rinse-off cosmetics containing plastic microbeads. Even better, other countries have followed suit with similar bans with varying phase-out dates over the next few years. But until they're gone altogether, it's important to pay close attention to what's in the rinse-off body washes and scrubs you buy.

Corinne Morley is the gobal in-house beauty expert for New Zealand-based Trilogy. “In the world of beauty, there are few worse polluters than plastic microbeads, phthalates, sodium laurel sulfate, parabens and silicone oils," she says. "Aside from drying out and irritating the surface of the skin, these non-biodegradable ingredients wash straight down the drain and out into the ocean."
