health: 5 Things to Know of Paronychia by Mei Marcie
Health
August 14, 2015
Paronychia (pronounced: pair-uh-NIK-ee-uh) is a skin infection at fingernail or toenail. Here are a few things you need to know:
- It's common in kids who bite nails or suck their fingers.
- The infected area is swollen, red, pus-filled and painful.
- Clipping a nail too short or trimming the cuticle risks injuring the skin, allowing bacteria, fungus and germs to enter.
- Dirty work with soap and water contact is also a risk factor.
- Keep your hands and feet clean and dry.
If paronychia doesn't get better after a week or if there is pus under skin, see a doctor right away.
