Do you balance your checkbook? When I established my first checking account an important thing I learned to do was balance it. This helped me confirm what I really had in the account so I wouldn’t be overdrawn. That was before ATMs, online access and bank apps. 

It’s super easy now to see in real time all the activity in your account. Instead, review your checking account weekly (some do this daily) to make sure nothing fishy is going on. Keeping a bit of a cushion in your checking account or linking it to your savings or money market will help keep you in the black.
