Do You Let Your Kids Throw Rocks Into the Water? Here's Why You Should, Mom & Dad! by Mike Prochaska
One of my kid’s favorite activities is throwing rocks into the water. I bet your kids would love it, too. Mine can spend hours doing it. In fact, today at the beach we spent three hours exploring rocks and throwing them into the water. Throwing rocks can also be a great stress reliever! We look for the biggest rocks we can find and then I ask them questions like:
- “How far do you think I can throw this?”
- “How big of a splash will this rock make?”
- “If we stand here will we get wet?”
Then we threw the rock into the water to see what happens. Also, you can teach kids how to skip rocks, which improves eye-hand coordination. And it’s fun! Stone skipping is throwing a flat stone across water in such a way that it bounces off the surface, preferably many times. The object of the game is to see how many times a stone can bounce before it sinks and count how many times it bounces before it falls into the water. Kids also learn problem-solving skills by figuring out which rocks will skip and which won’t.
