Men in Early Childhood Education: My Interview With Australian Teacher Adam Antrobus! by Mike Prochaska

Adam Antrobus is a teacher at Ingle Farm Primary School in Australia. Here are some of his thoughts about working in the Early Childhood Education field!

Q. How did you get into this field?

"I worked in a kindy in London as a teaching assistant and loved it. When I returned home I applied for uni."

Q. What do you see as the advantages of having male teachers?

"Some children come from single parent families. As a male teacher you may be the most stable and influential male in their lives. It also allows children to beat taught from a male perspective, which could vary significantly from that of a female teacher."

Q. Anything else you want to tell us about working with young children?

"The opportunity to see growth and development in kids is amazing. Watching a student have an 'aha' moment as they finally get something is a great feeling."

Q. What's your favorite memory working with kids?

"My favorite moment was my time in London. That was awesome. Having an opportunity to work in another country as an educator was surreal."

Q. Do you have any Facebook pages or a blog you would like to share with us?

"The MENtor Program for Males in ECE is a program that I was an advocate for in my final year at uni that has taken giant steps forward since then."

Q. Anything else you want to share?

"Utilize every opportunity you have to network with others and share experiences."

Q. What’s your favorite book to read to your class?

“’The Day the Crayons Quit.’”

Q. What’s your favorite activity to do with your kids?

“The Wombat Wobble!”
