Pageant of the Masters: An August Night Filled With Living Art in Laguna Beach, California by Sheri B Doyle

Imagine sitting under the stars in an amphitheater in Laguna Beach, Calif., with an orchestra playing and ocean breezes swaying through the air. Soon the lights shine and giant reproductions of art are brought to life in front of your eyes. It is a transformation to another world where you are caught in a moment you cannot believe.
This is the Pageant of the Masters.
The annual event is part of the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts. Each year a theme is chosen and then art is brought to life. Large canvases are painted and hung, waiting for the actors and actresses to bring the piece to life by standing in for their painted counterpart. From January to July, 60,000 volunteer hours are spent getting ready for the living art production. Watching for 90 minutes, every moment spent becomes easily understood and appreciated.
The Pageant of the Masters was not a planned event for us – we stumbled upon it while walking through the Festival of the Arts, which in itself is an amazing collection of artists showing off their work. We bought tickets on a whim and spent a magical night watching a performance my husband still refers to as, “The Eighth Wonder of The World.” While that may be a bit of an exaggeration, it absolutely one of the most memorable performances we have ever witnessed.
