Donations & Volunteers Needed at Border Coalitions: Here's How You Can Help the Migrant Population by Tiffany Zook

If you are not living on the southern border, but feel compelled to help with the ever-growing border crisis, here is a great way to support cities and families directly impacted. Most migrant families are arriving from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Congo (Africa) with just the clothes on their backs. Many families still have a long journey ahead of them. With bus terminals overcrowded and backlogged, we created backpacks, drawstring bags or reusable shopping bags full of some essentials for their trip.
At the Val Verde Border Humanitarian Coalition in Del Rio, Texas, each family passing through receives a "welcome bag." Each bag contains the following:
- 2 bottles of water
- health kit (toothpaste, toothbrush, hand towel, washcloth, nail file, bar soap, bandages)
- individually wrapped travel snacks/granola bars
- proteins like peanuts/tuna packets/beef stick
- coloring book/Spanish coloring book and crayons
- small toy or small stuffed animal
- New Testament in Spanish
- reusable water bottle
- T-shirt size medium or large
- shoelaces
- small notepad/pen
- diapers/baby wipes (if needed)
Added extras might include:
- mini deodorants
- cup of noodles
- Chapstick
- hair ties
- travel tissues
- apples, if donations are available
Coalitions across the border are giving it their all to avoid homelessness and human trafficking among this vulnerable migrant population. Maybe your community group or youth group would like to create bags, collect items or volunteer at our center or a center near you. Would you consider partnering with a border coalition?
