Training to Be a Playworker: Here's What a Playworker Does & Why I'm Training to Be One by Mike Prochaska

Have you ever wondered what playworkers do? Playwork is a professional field of practice, focusing on the children's right to play. It is the role of the playworker to create and maintain spaces for kids to play.
What Playworkers Do
Playworkers support play that is led by children, not by adults, without any planned outcomes. Playworkers provide children with a space to be themselves and to play in the ways in which they want and need to. Playworkers provide opportunities to play, and then observe and reflect on what they see.
It is the job of a playworker to ensure that the broadest possible range of play types can be engaged with or accessed by children. And to observe, reflect and analyze the play that is happening and select a mode of intervention or make a change to the play space if needed.
Training to Be a Playworker
Pop-Up Adventure Play has developed a playworker development course that brings together people from all over the world. The course gives them the tools for understanding playwork and use them as part of their work with kids. The course costs $950 per person, but there are discounts available for groups and there is a financial aid program if cost is a barrier to participation. Students are given two years to complete the course which is completely online, flexing around the students because they understand how busy life can be sometimes.
This 12-module distance-learning course has been running for about eight years now and there are about 300 students on the course from 28 countries. Each module has a list of readings and then assignments that you reflect on, complete and then send in to your tutor for their feedback before you progress onto the next module.
The course is entirely online and you will receive a certificate of completion at the end. I am beginning my adventure into playworker training and hope to share what I learn with everyone!
